ALO is pleased to announce the award of a Special Initiative in Egypt. Sponsored by USAID-Egypt, this two-year, $749,999 grant was awarded in December 2002 to Georgia State University (GSU) to support a sustainable partnership with the Alexandria Institute of Technology (AIT) to develop Egypt’s human resource capacity in business management, with a focus on international marketing. The partnership between GSU and AIT seeks to contribute to Egypt's workforce development by providing up-to-date, market-relevant skills to current and prospective marketing professionals through a fully functioning distance education facility. For more information on this partnership, contact ALO Program Associate Marilyn Crane. ALO hosted a panel at the African Studies Association Annual Meeting on December 5, 2002, in Washington, DC. The panel, entitled, “Approaches to Development in Africa through Higher Education and Information Technologies: Successes and Challenges,” was moderated by ALO Executive Director Joan Claffey and featured ALO partners David Wiley, Michigan State University, Melissa Clarke, Howard University, Akanmu Adebayo, Kennesaw State University, and Owen Gaede, Florida State University. Before a standing-room only audience, the panelists examined the unique set of development challenges that they faced in their respective host country (Ghana and South Africa) and outlined how they sought to overcome these challenges using not only high-tech solutions but also, when necessary, more conventional “low-tech” approaches. For more information on the panel, contact ALO Program Associate Marilyn Crane.
