FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (7/22/05) Contact Information: GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY AWARDED ALO PARTNERSHIP Washington, DC (July 22, 2005) – The Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has awarded a grant of $430,250 to George Washington University for the Basic Education Professional Development (BEPD) program. George Washington University will partner with UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS), the Education Policy and Data Center (EPDC), and the Global Learning Portal (GLP). The ultimate goal of this partnership program is to design, pilot, and refine an on-going Internet-based professional development program to help fill the human resource gap in education data and policy necessary to achieve the goals of EFA. This program will collaborate to develop and deliver a new low-cost prototype for professional development training in Africa via the Internet. The proposed program will identify needs, develop course materials and modules, and deliver training in education development and data management. The training will be developed at a certificate level and delivered via the Global Learning Portal (GLP) to cohorts at locations in Ethiopia, Ghana, and/or Uganda. This pilot program will be highly sustainable and could serve as a model for replication in other sectors and other regions of the world. ALO promotes global development through higher education. in 1992, assists the nation’s six major higher education associations
build their partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID) and help their member institutions foster cooperative development
partnerships with colleges and universities abroad. Through partnerships,
