FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (12/22/04) Contact Information: THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDED ALO PARTNERSHIP Washington, DC (December 22, 2004) – The Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has awarded a grant of $799,651 to The Ohio State University (OSU) to strengthen the human capacity of East African faculties of agriculture to improve smallholder agricultural productivity and to address food security concerns within the region through research, training, and outreach activities. For this project, OSU is partnered with Michigan State University (MSU), Makerere University (Uganda), Egerton University (Kenya), Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania), and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (FORUM, East and Southern Africa). Through the provision of an innovative, replicable, cost-efficient long-term degree training program for training future scientists and teachers, the partnership will help Faculties of Agriculture meet the human resource challenge. The partnership will provide 12 scholarships for degree training to students from the three partner institutions for “sandwich” work in the United States. Training will consist of one year of coursework at OSU or MSU followed by supervised in-country thesis research. A Research Seed Grants program will be established to support in-region thesis research. Candidates will have both U.S. and regional faculty mentors. A Regional Management Committee will provide management oversight. In addition to long-term degree training, the partnership program will provide short-term training programs for agriculture faculty members to develop and update their skills in areas of critical need and to strengthen links between Faculties of Agriculture and agribusinesses. A key design feature is FORUM’s involvement as the partnership’s Regional Coordinating Unit. ALO, established in 1992, assists the nation's six major higher education
associations build their partnership with USAID and help their member
institutions foster cooperative development partnerships with colleges
