FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (11/18/04) Contact Information: ALO BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPOINTS MORFIT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Washington, DC (November 18, 2004) – The Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO), Nils Hasselmo, announced the decision of the Board that Christine A. Morfit will succeed Joan M. Claffey as Executive Director. Claffey, who served as Executive Director since the inception of ALO in 1992, retired from the position in June 2004. At ALO, Morfit will oversee ongoing activities and develop new programs designed to promote strategic alliances between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the higher education community. Hasselmo, President of the Association of American Universities, said, “we look forward to a fine future for ALO…we believe that the organization can, and will, continue to make major contributions to university participation in development.” Morfit joined ALO as Deputy Executive Director in February 2003 and served as Interim Executive Director from June 2004. Previously, she was deputy executive director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) responsible for U.S. and visiting scholar programs for the worldwide Fulbright Senior Scholar Program. She has over fourteen years of overseas experience establishing international education and international affairs programs in Hong Kong, Thailand, India, and Indonesia. Said Morfit of her appointment, “I look forward to working with a program that encourages U.S. colleges and universities to work with USAID and expand knowledge for development and highlights the value of higher education institutions as vehicles for international development.” ALO, established in 1992, assists the nation's six major higher education associations build their partnership with USAID and help their member institutions foster cooperative development partnerships with colleges and universities abroad.
