Conference Overview Sustaining partnership projects in the Middle East despite continuing unrest in the region and a new partnership program intended to bolster Mexican economic competitiveness were among the issues discussed at the eighth annual Higher Education for Development (HED) Synergy in Development conference for institutional partnerships held Aug. 9-11 in Washington, DC. More than 300 academics and government officials from more than 15 countries gathered to discuss how higher education partnerships work to transform lives and institutions through economic, agricultural and social capacity building. The conference was sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The event featured roundtables, panels and plenary sessions which emphasized the role of higher education in economic growth and how the partnership model can help colleges and universities address important development challenges. Conference sessions also looked at the benefit of these partnerships to local communities, both in the United States and abroad, as well as the benefit of exposing students and faculty to different cultures and societies.
