STATEMENT FROM AASCU PRESIDENT MURIEL HOWARD ON TODAY'S SUPREME COURT RULING IN SCHUETTE V. COALITION TO DEFEND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

“While we are disappointed with the Supreme Court’s ruling in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, we are pleased that the decision leaves the Court’s previous opinions in favor of properly configured race-conscious admissions intact,” said AASCU President Muriel Howard.

“Today’s decision represents a setback for minority rights, however, in that it allows popular referenda to ban perfectly constitutional remedies to past discrimination. This is a regrettable retreat from the justice system’s historical mission of protecting minorities from political over-reach by demographic or political majorities.”
