Julius L. Chambers, 2013 AASCU's Distinguished Alumnus Award Recipient

Julius Chambers became the first African American editor of the Law Review and graduated first in his class at the University of North Carolina. He also became the first African American to become a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the University's highest honor society. He litigated key cases before the Supreme Court, including the school busing decision in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education (1971). He is a former director-counsel (highest executive) of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
