Innovation Category:Community Development
Project Director:Kenneth Walker, Director Contact Information:(205) 652-3665,
Project Description:The University of West Alabama (UWA) has provided Greene County, Alabama with a resource team to evaluate the county’s assets and liabilities and to develop a plan to help improve the social and economic conditions of the county.
- To provide leadership and community development training and education opportunities.
- Provide residents with educational opportunities, treatments, and resources needed to combat and recover from drug and substance abuse challenges.
- Reduce the county drop-out rate while improving the quality of education provided to students.
- Develop stronger infrastructure needed to recruit and develop a stronger commercial base
Outcomes:The University was successful in securing a grant on behalf of the county for the development of a first-rate industry recruitment and marketing video. Copies of this marketing video have been given to certified economic developers around the Southeast. Additionally, university staff members have worked with school administrators, ministers, and government officials to reduce the county’s high drop-out rate while improving the quality of education provided to county students. Routine training in entrepreneurship, work-force development, and career planning and money management is offered at the county’s vocational school.
Evaluation Approach:Committee Groups are required to give a full account for the progress made on an assigned goal to the greater community. Community lunches and dinners are held to give Working Groups a forum for presentations. These gatherings are often sponsored by community business and civic groups. A year end review of the Strategic Plan is conducted by community and university members to measure achievements and met goals.
Potential for Replication:Program format has been replicated in surrounding jurisdictions and could be used regionally/ nationally.
