STATEMENT BY AASCU PRESIDENT MILDRED GARCÍA, ED.D., ON THE 2018 BIPARTISAN OMNIBUS APPROPRIATIONS AGREEMENT

March 22, 2018

We are pleased to support the bipartisan Congressional agreement on appropriations for the remainder of the current fiscal year. This bill is long-overdue. We applaud the increases to the maximum Pell grant award, campus-based aid programs, minority-serving institutions, and other programs that are critically important to our students and the institutions that educate them. The agreement includes eligibility modifications to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program too, which will further benefit student borrowers.

We are, however, disheartened and profoundly disappointed that a legislative fix for DACA was not part of this package. Given the broad national support for legalizing the status of Dreamers, we once again urge Congress to act in a bipartisan manner on DACA and legislate a permanent fix.
