From ALO's Partners...

The Oregon State University/University of Botswana partnership (2000), have received a $400,000 award from USAID-EDDI (Education for Development and Democracy Initiative) to support their project "Institutional Strengthening Through Natural Resources Management: Creating a New Paradigm of the Commons."

Virginia Tech has received a $2.2 million grant from USAID to develop a cadre of Malawians who can prepare teacher educators. The funding began in May 2001 and will continue throughout 2006. This latest grant follows two partnership awards from ALO: the first, started in 1999, is with the Malawi Institute of Educatio, and the Domasi College of Education. Their second award was received in 2000, for a partnership with Domasi. Although different in focus - the first partnership is studying the cultural context of teaching and learning in three trial schools, and the second deals with incorporating research to encourage on-going development and evaluation of Malawian basic education policy and programs - they both have as a fundamental goal an analysis of the existing basic education system in Malawi and how it can be reorganized to better serve both the students and Malawi society as a whole.
