HED ANNOUNCES TEN NEW INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
Inaugural New IDEAS Partnership Awards Announced
Washington, DC (July 7, 2006) – Higher Education for Development
(HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID), announces ten new grant awards under the inaugural competition
of the New Innovative Development and Engagement Across Sectors (New IDEAS)
partnership program. The ten new awards are worth up to $125,000 each.
The New IDEAS program allows U.S. colleges, universities and community
colleges to propose their own partnership programs that strengthen the
capacity of higher education institutions to address development issues
in any USAID presence country, allows the higher education community to
demonstrate to USAID unique or exceptionally innovative approaches and
ideas, and encourages broader participation by the higher education community
in development activities.
The ten New IDEAS grants were awarded to:

Hillsborough Community College/Nelson Mandela Metropolitan
University (South Africa) will create an innovative one-year
certificate program to prepare students from formerly disadvantaged
groups for jobs at firms engaged in regional and international trade;

Muscatine Community College/Georgian Technical University
(Georgia) will establish a new community college as part of the higher
education system in Georgia;

Portland State University/University of Natural Sciences
(Vietnam) will establish an innovative environmental community-university
engagement program in Vietnam;
-
Saint Louis University/National University of Central Peru
will build local capacity for evidence-based decision making in order
to prevent disease and increase protection of the environment in Peru;

U.S./Indonesia Teacher Education Consortium will
work to improve the quality of decentralized basic education teaching
and learning in Indonesia;

University of Denver/Tbilisi State University (Georgia)
to create a university-based clinic in Georgia as an educational training
center and curricular model to support mediation and conflict resolution
practitioners in the South Caucasus region;

University of Georgia – Griffin Campus/Zamorano Pan
American School of Agriculture (Honduras) will work to promote
economic growth in rural Honduras by reducing crop loss to disease
and pests;

University of Maryland/Stavropol State Agrarian University
(Russian Federation) to establish a consortium of agricultural universities
in Southern Russia;

University of Michigan, William Davidson Institute/International
Academy of Business (Kazakhstan) to support the business
community in Kazakhstan by providing training to skilled workers and
opportunities for small micro-enterprises and NGOs; and
-
University of Southern California/Daystar University/Moi
University (Kenya) to develop and strengthen research capacity
of university faculty, NGO professionals and community leaders working
with vulnerable children in Nairobi and Eldoret, Kenya.
The HED program engages the resources of higher education institutions
in the United States and abroad for global social and economic development
through human and institutional capacity building. HED assists the nation’s
six major higher education associations and their members in partnering
with USAID, as well as other development agencies and donor organizations.
