HED ANNOUNCES TEN NEW INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
Inaugural New IDEAS Partnership Awards Announced

Washington, DC (July 7, 2006) – Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announces ten new grant awards under the inaugural competition of the New Innovative Development and Engagement Across Sectors (New IDEAS) partnership program. The ten new awards are worth up to $125,000 each.

The New IDEAS program allows U.S. colleges, universities and community colleges to propose their own partnership programs that strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions to address development issues in any USAID presence country, allows the higher education community to demonstrate to USAID unique or exceptionally innovative approaches and ideas, and encourages broader participation by the higher education community in development activities.

The ten New IDEAS grants were awarded to:

  • Hillsborough Community College/Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (South Africa) will create an innovative one-year certificate program to prepare students from formerly disadvantaged groups for jobs at firms engaged in regional and international trade;

  • Muscatine Community College/Georgian Technical University (Georgia) will establish a new community college as part of the higher education system in Georgia;

  • Portland State University/University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam) will establish an innovative environmental community-university engagement program in Vietnam;

  • University of Denver/Tbilisi State University (Georgia) to create a university-based clinic in Georgia as an educational training center and curricular model to support mediation and conflict resolution practitioners in the South Caucasus region;

  • University of Georgia – Griffin Campus/Zamorano Pan American School of Agriculture (Honduras) will work to promote economic growth in rural Honduras by reducing crop loss to disease and pests;

  • University of Maryland/Stavropol State Agrarian University (Russian Federation) to establish a consortium of agricultural universities in Southern Russia;
