FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (3/4/05) Contact Information: ALO ANNOUNCES TWO NEW USAID/MEXICO TIES PARTNERSHIPS Washington, DC (March 4, 2005) - The Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)/Mexico, announces two new grant awards of up to $300,000 each under the U.S.-Mexico Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships (TIES) Initiative. The new partnerships focus on strengthening Mexico’s capacity to prevent, diagnose and control tuberculosis. The institutions selected for award are the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and the University of Texas at El Paso. The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio is partnered with the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas to establish a Masters of Infectious Disease degree at Tamaulipas. In addition, the program will provide focused community-based resources to the fight against infectious diseases. The University of Texas at El Paso is partnered with the Universidad Autónoma de Cuidad Juárez to build inter-institutional ties through collaborative graduate level training, research and community outreach. These activities will specifically focus on developing an expert core of Mexican faculty in the area of tuberculosis. This brings the total number of higher education partnerships under the TIES Initiative to 37. ALO, established in 1992, assists the nation's six major higher education associations build their partnership with USAID and help their member institutions foster cooperative development partnerships with colleges and universities abroad.
