6th Annual American Democracy Project (ADP) National Meeting

Join us in Snowbird, Utah, June 12-14, 2008 for the 6th Annual American Democracy Project National Meeting as we explore the theme “Citizenship in the New Millennium.” We have an outstanding program planned with terrific plenary speakers, concurrent sessions, workshops, a Campus and Friends Showcase, opportunities for small group discussions, a Karaoke and Barbecue Bash, and much more.

Our Speakers include:

Erik Peterson
Senior Vice President, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Director and Founder, Global Strategy Institute, has lectured about trends in global development all over the world.

Tamara Draut
Author of Strapped: Why America’s 20- and 30-Somethings Can’t Get Ahead and Director of the Economic Opportunity Program at Dēmos.

Maya Enista
Chief Executive Officer, Mobilize.org, has been active in public service since she was an undergraduate. She began her career as the east coast coordinator for Rock The Vote at age 17.

Gerald L. Taylor
Southeast Regional Director, Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), has a long history of community development and organizing work throughout the United States.

There will be featured presentations on some of our signature projects, including the Deliberative Polling Initiative, the Political Engagement Project, the Seven Revolutions Project, the Stewardship of Public Lands Initiative, and the Civic Agency Project, a new initiative launched in partnership with the Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.

Pre-Conference

The conference will kick off on Thursday, June 12 with the following Pre-Conference Workshops:

The first plenary session will be at 4:00 pm featuring our keynote speaker, Erik R. Peterson. During the past two years, Erik and a group of nine ADP campuses have been developing resources and strategies to prepare undergraduates as globally competent citizens. Erik will discuss the work of that project in his opening address; other participants will share how the project is being implemented on ADP campuses at concurrent sessions throughout the conference.

In addition to the regular program features, Friday night we will host another Civic Engagement Film Festival. Saturday morning will begin with an optional Sunrise Hike up Hidden Peak . Saturday night there will be a grand celebration, with a Karaoke and Barbecue Bash (featuring, of course, songs about democracy). This is going to be a very rich program, both a celebration of accomplishments and a dialogue about future initiatives.

Hotel: Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort—Cliff Lodge email The Cliff Lodge is famous for its scenic mountain views, outdoor activities, and high-end spa. Inside you will find North America's foremost Oriental rug collection as décor. Hotel accommodations can be booked directly with the hotel by calling Snowbird’s Central Reservation Office at 1-800-453-3000 or by emailing lodging@snowbird.com. Individuals are encouraged to identify themselves as part of AASCU’s American Democracy Project (ADP) room block to receive the discounted group rate. The special conference rate is $139 for a Standard Room, $209 for a Deluxe Room, $259 for a One-Bedroom Suite, and $379 for a Two-Bedroom Suite. Added onto the rate will be a room tax and a state tax. Currently, the state tax is 11.35%. In order to receive the discounted group rate, reservations need to be made by Friday, May 16. Reservations must be guaranteed by a credit card or advance payment equal to one night’s room and tax. Deposits will be refunded if reservations are cancelled 48 hours prior to the day of arrival and a cancellation number is obtained. Should cancellation be received within 48 hours of the scheduled arrival date, the entire one night’s lodging deposit will be forfeited. Early departures are considered a cancellation unless there is a 48-hour notice. Late cancellation and early departure fees will be waived in the case of a documented catastrophic emergency. Check-in time at the hotel is 4 p.m. and check-out time is 11 a.m. The hotel guest pool and three hot tubs are located outdoors on Level 3 and are heated year round. Hours for the hotel guest pool are 8 a.m.-10 p.m. The Cliff Lodge also offers high-speed wireless internet throughout the property and a business center. Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is approximately 30 miles from the Salt Lake City International Airport. Express round trip airport transfers from Salt Lake International Airport to Snowbird are currently $60.00. Hours from the airport are from 8 a.m. to midnight with departures every hour. Return trips leave Snowbird 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the hour, based on reservations. Return trips should be reconfirmed with Canyon the day prior to departure. General Information Canyon Transportation is located in the baggage claim area adjacent to the carousels. Return airport trips are scheduled for three hours on the hour before scheduled airline departure to allow for airport check-in and security screening. 48 hours notice is required for all cancellations.
