Pre-meeting banner
From the perspective of a president or chancellor, managing campus information technology resources may seem to have many more questions than answers.

Presenters:
Joel L. Hartman, Ed.D., Vice Provost for Information Technologies and Resources, University of Central Florida
Hilary Baker, Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, California State University, Northridge

Typical questions include:
What is the right level of IT investment? Is our network secure? How well is our ERP system performing? Should we engage in online learning? What should we do about the Net Generation? Are our classrooms up-to-date? What technological support do our researchers need to be competitive?

However important, these questions miss a vital point: How can information technology and information resources be strategically harnessed and aligned to ensure the sustainability and success of the institution and its people?

To make matters more challenging, technology changes so rapidly that keeping up with the latest trends— not to mention decoding the latest IT buzz words—is all but futile. What’s a CEO to do?

The pre-meeting seminar will help participants develop a framework for thinking about information technology strategically, linking IT’s capabilities, potential and risks to institutional goals and needs. The seminar will be conducted in English, not technical jargon, and the conversation will focus on strategic thinking and institutional alignment. The seminar will include brief presentations and group discussions so that participants can share ideas and questions with one another.

In addition, new insights into how the economic climate is affecting students’ college enrollment decisions will be shared, based upon Royall & Company’s yearlong study, Higher Education Enrollment and the Economy, lending insight into institutional enrollment management issues. Participants will learn and share strategies on how institutions can better leverage a changing stream of public resources, shifting student perceptions, and other mission-critical strategies for surviving and thriving in the midst of new fiscal realities.

Descriptions of Activities

Sunday, November 22
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The Guenther House, King William District and Southtown
($36 per person)

Attendees will board a motor coach at the Market Street entrance for a short tour of The Guenther House and museum, the 1860 home of Carl Hilmar Guenther, founder of the Pioneer Flour Mills.  Afterwards, participants will walk through The King William District and participate in a docent-led tour of the Steve’s Homestead, the only house in the district still open to the public.  After visiting the Steve’s Homestead, the group will proceed to nearby Southtown, an eclectic neighborhood displaying the artistic side of San Antonio, where they may visit specialty shops, antique stores, galleries and restaurants.  (If attendees opt to fit in a late bite to eat instead of the walking tour through The King William District and Steve’s Homestead, there is a café in The Guenther House and neighborhood restaurants in SouthTown).

1:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.

River Barge to the San Antonio Museum of Art
($48 per person)

Guests will gather outside the River Street entrance to board the river barges and enjoy a 30-minute narrated tour up the vibrant new section of the Riverwalk to the San Antonio Museum of Art.  Highlights of the museum include the new Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art where one might achieve a deeper understanding of Latin American art, history, customs and culture. The Rockefeller Center exhibits collections of pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and Republican periods, also with folk art, modern and contemporary pieces.  If these are not enough options, there is also the new  Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing, one of the largest centers for Asian art in the Southwest.  Note: two exhibitions open during this tour:  Culinary Delights: Photographs by David Halliday and The Art of the Missions of Northern New Spain

Monday, November 23
2:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Glimpse of Missions—Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose
($33 per person)

Motor coaches will take participants to the Mission Conception, the oldest un-restored Catholic Church in the United States.  Even without its fortress walls, the mission chapel and annex buildings still tell a story that the tour guide will help decipher.  Attendees will walk to the “Queen of the Mission,” Mission San Jose where the guided tour shows what mission life was like in 1730 for Spaniards, as well as the domesticated Native Americans.  Walk into the Granary, thought to be the oldest standing structure in Texas or admire the limestone sculpture of the chapel while honoring this remarkable time and culture.
