ALC Webinar: Faculty Socialization at Teaching Intensive Universities

February 17, 2010

New faculty present a dilemma for AASCU institutions. New faculty often come with an orientation to the values of the research institution where they earned their doctorate, as well as an allegiance to their discipline. Yet faculty roles in many AASCU institutions include not only research but a focus on teaching and student learning outcomes; a focus on community engagement and engaged scholarship; and an expectation for collaborative, interdisciplinary work. These roles, and a variety of others, are shaped by the particular mission and culture of AASCU institutions.

2010 American Democracy Project (ADP) National Meeting

June 17-19, 2010 • The Westin Providence

The American Democracy Project has been created to identify and develop strategies and approaches to prepare all undergraduates as informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. Yet as a recent study by our colleagues at AAC&U found, a gap exists between aspirations about civic engagement and actual campus practice. The question is how can we work to create “institutional intentionality” in our universities, moving from pockets of excellence that affect a few students to a broad effort that reaches all students? This is the question that has animated this project since its inception. Our theme this year reflects that commitment: “Agents and Architects of Democracy: Moving from Rhetoric to Reality.”
