2013 The Leadership Summit "Designing Learning Environments for the 21st Century"

AASCU, EDUCAUSE and the University of Central Florida are pleased to announce the eighth annual Leadership Summit "Designing Learning Environments for the 21st Century" which will be held on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando, Florida on June 20 - 21, 2013. (Note: Conference begins on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. and ends on Friday, June 21, 2013 at noon) 

About the Conference

Squeezed between declining revenues, rising expectations, and technology advancements, public universities face a challenging future. AASCU’s Red Balloon Project has identified a series of dramatic challenges, changing circumstances, and growing threats in this new era. Yet buried in the bad news are also signs of hope and renewal. How will you navigate these new circumstances? How will you build a leadership team to respond to this new context? How can you create programs that inspire rather than depress, that focus faculty on student success instead of budget shortfalls? In other words, how can you build a vision for the future so that your institution doesn’t just survive but thrive in this new age?

Those attending this team conference will participate in a two-day leadership summit to identify strategies for success in coping with these challenging circumstances and collaborate to explore new models and new approaches to undergraduate education in the context of reduced resources. It allows you to bring the key individuals from your campus that can build a shared vision and then implement that vision when they return to campus.

Conference Content

  • Identify the threats and promises of this new technology-enabled landscape of higher education
  • Listen to perspectives of national experts, as well as senior academic leaders, faculty, and students, about the ideal characteristics of a learning-centered institution
  • Discuss key design principles 
  • Work closely with other campus teams to consider new models and new approaches to teaching and learning
  • Launch a design process for your institution


Conference Eligibility

The conference is open to AASCU Presidential Teams with 5-6 individuals per team, designated by the president. In many cases, the president is the team leader. If the president is unable to participate, a senior university official is designated as the team leader. Team composition varies from campus to campus, depending on how individual campuses want to build a strategic team. However, the team usually includes the chief academic officer, the chief information officer, and a variety of other senior officials from student affairs, the library, college deans, etc.

The Courtyard by Marriott at UCF is located one mile south of the University of Central Florida and 14 miles from Orlando International Airport, east of Orlando. The major resorts (Disney, etc.) are on the southwest side of the city, about 45 minutes away.

Room Rate

Hotel accommodations must be reserved directly with the hotel by calling 407-277-7676. The special conference rate for a room is $105 plus 12.5% tax. To obtain these rates, you must call the hotel by Monday, April 30, 2012 and identify yourself as part of the AASCU Leadership Summit June 2013.

Individual reservations should be guaranteed via a major credit card accepted by the hotel. This deposit will be refunded if the reservation is cancelled up to 72 hours prior to arrival. Guaranteed reservations are held for the first night only, so if you must delay your arrival, be sure to notify the hotel. Breakfast for up to two people per room is included with your stay.

Travel Information

A shuttle will be provided for you from the Marriott Courtyard to the UCF campus on Thursday and Friday. On Friday at the end of the conference (noon), one shuttle will go to the airport from the UCF campus and another shuttle will go back to the Marriott for those of you who rented cars or are leaving at a later time. Parking will not be available on the UCF campus for attendees. If you are renting a car, it is free to park at the Marriott.

Arrival in Orlando
You should plan to arrive in Orlando on Wednesday evening, June 20th. The program will start at 8:30 am on Thursday morning, June 21st.

Departure from Orlando
The program will end at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 22nd. The trip back to the airport from the university is about 45 minutes, but getting thru security at the Orlando airport can sometimes take a substantial amount of time. To be safe, plan your departure flight no earlier than 4:00 pm on Friday.

From the Orlando International Airport:
The hotel is 14 miles from the Orlando Airport. Typical minimum charges for transportation one way to or from the airport are: Taxis - $45.

Driving Directions from the airport:
From Orlando Airport, take the North exit. From airport, follow 528 E four miles to 417 N. Follow 417 N to exit 37A (University Blvd East). Follow University Blvd 2 miles.
Courtyard by Marriott is located just off University Blvd on the right (behind Burger King).
