Changes that Matter: Looking to the Future of Higher Education

Higher education has become a central focus for policy in the nation. This challenges academic leaders at every level to develop a conceptual framework for understanding the changes in our society that confront our institutions. Changes that Matter: Looking to the Future of Higher Education brings together three notable thinkers in higher education to address issues of relevance that are likely to transform the academy.

Who Should Participate

Academic leaders at the institutional, school and departmental level should participate. Faculty leaders should also participate, as well as school officials who might be impacted by changes in the structure of educational delivery.

Peter EwellPeter Ewell, Vice President, National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS)

Peter T. Ewell is Vice President of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS). A member of the staff since 1981, Dr. Ewell’s work focuses on assessing institutional and higher education system effectiveness and the outcomes of college, and involves both research and direct consulting with institutions and state systems on collecting and using assessment information in planning, evaluation, and budgeting. He has directed many projects on this topic, including initiatives funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the National Institute for Education, the Consortium for the Advancement of Private Higher Education, the Lumina Foundation, and the Pew Charitable Trusts. In addition, he has consulted with over 375 colleges and universities and twenty-four state systems of higher education on topics related to performance indicators and the assessment of student learning. Dr. Ewell has authored seven books and numerous articles on the topic of improving undergraduate instruction through the assessment of student outcomes. In addition, he has prepared commissioned papers for many state agencies and national organizations. A graduate of Haverford College, he received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 1976 and was on the faculty of the University of Chicago.


Richard PattenaudeRichard Pattenaude, Chancellor, University of Maine System

Richard L. Pattenaude became chancellor of the University of Maine System in July 2007, after serving for sixteen years as president of the University of Southern Maine.

Prior to that, he served for five years as vice president for academic affairs at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain and another five years as associate vice president for academic affairs at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Before moving to New York, President Pattenaude was a member of the political science faculty and an associate dean for six years at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

A native of Seattle, Wash., he earned his bachelor's degree with honors in economics at California's San Jose State University and his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Colorado. His areas of expertise and publishing include American government, university leadership, public administration, and organizational theory.

He is actively involved in numerous community and business ventures. Chancellor Pattenaude serves, or has served, as a board member of the Portland Museum of Art, World Affairs Council, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the Maine Science & Technology Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Lee Auto Malls, Maine Development Foundation, United Way, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Maine Medical Center, Institute for Civic Leadership, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He recently was selected to sit on the National Commission on Accountability in Higher Education, a group sponsored by the Ford Foundation, and the Association of State Higher Education Executive Officers.

Chancellor Pattenaude and his wife, Michele, have a home in Bangor.


Nancy L. ZimpherNancy Zimpher, Chancellor, State University of New York

Nancy L. Zimpher is the 12th Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY), the nation’s largest comprehensive public university system with some 440,000 students. A dynamic, nationally recognized educational leader, Zimpher begins her tenure with a commitment to visit all 64 SUNY campuses in her first 100 days so she can meet with and learn from students, faculty, administrators, community leaders and other stakeholders on the future of New York’s public higher education system.

Zimpher holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education and Speech, a master’s degree in English Literature, and a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Higher Education Administration, all from The Ohio State University. She is married to Dr. Kenneth R. Howey, a nationally recognized expert and researcher in teacher preparation, particularly in urban settings, and has one son, Fletcher, and two step-sons, Mark and Michael.
