My First Generation Story
I would describe myself as a man of purpose. And I do my best to fulfill my genuine purpose every day at SVSU.
As Homecoming King, president of the Valley Voices Gospel Choir, member of Forever Red, student mentor and orientation leader, I have had a busy but fulfilling journey at SVSU. I don’t believe in labeling or being part of just one group. I have an open and loud personality, so getting involved on campus was natural for me.
I have a passion for students and eventually I want to pursue a career as the dean of students at a university. I love meeting new generations of SVSU Cardinals and I hope to make an impact on students that will stay with them forever. As a first-generation college student, I truly appreciate the community that makes up this university.
Among my list of achievements at SVSU, being named Homecoming King in 2015 is one I will always remember. It was a breathtaking experience. My Homecoming partner, Charnae Keith, who was named queen, and I devoted hours upon hours into our campaign. We went above and beyond to make sure people remembered us. We even performed our own choreographed rendition of the music video “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. I enjoyed the process and was grateful to be recognized for our hard work and sacrifices.
Out of all of my experiences at SVSU, being part of the Valley Voices Gospel Choir has impacted me the most. I think of the choir members as my family away from home. As president of the group, I was responsible for teaching the music, managing the choir, and making sure everyone felt they were in a safe place to worship and share their stories. The members of the choir pushed me to grow in my faith and as a leader, and supported me throughout this journey.
As I look back on my experiences at SVSU, I am most grateful for the people I have met here. I call this support group my “chocolate chips,” and they have made me the person I am today. I hope I have been able to impact people the way I have been impacted. If I had an impact on at least one person at SVSU, my job was fulfilled.
