My First Generation Story
It was a big deal for me to leave Philadelphia, a major city on the eastern side of Pennsylvania, to travel five hours away to rural western Pennsylvania. I am the first in my family to attend college, so my first year was a year full of adjusting, experiencing, learning, and living a true college experience by taking the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone.
One of my initial reasons for choosing IUP was financial; it was the
best fit for me in terms of cost. Then, when I visited the campus and checked out the Communications Media department, I saw great potential with what I could do with that major—I knew I could truly learn at IUP and gain the experience needed in the real world. I'm doing an internship this summer with Voice of America in D.C.!
About the Student
I was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the continental United States when I was about 3-years-old. Philadelphia is the place where I've lived the longest, after Puerto Rico, and I graduated from the Arts Academy of Benjamin Rush, Class of 2013, where my major was Instrumental Music. After earning a full tuition scholarship, I decided to attend IUP, where I was able to pursue media production after discovering it through a course in high school.
