My First Generation Story
My parents had an arranged marriage at a young age and moved to the United States from Greece to give their future family a better life.
For as long as I can remember, my mom always told me, “Mη ανησυχείς όλα θα είναι εντάξει,” which translates to “Don’t worry, everything will go well.” She taught me that if I want something, then I would have to go after it. I took her advice and decided that I wanted to go to college. My goals were to receive a higher education, get a wonderful job that I loved, and support my family.
I applied to schools that had a large population of first generation college students. Also, I made sure that the school I chose had resources to assist me with my transition academically.
I fell in love with Keene State College. It has become my home away from home and I have found this amazing community of people that inspire and support me every day. The decision that I made to attend college has made me unbelievably happy. I am now entering my third year at Keene State with a major in nursing. I love helping people and I believe that the medical field is where I belong. Whenever I think that school is getting difficult or stressful, I try to think about the letters I'll have at the end of my name when I become a nurse, and that motivates me to keep going.
After college, I plan on enrolling in a master’s program to become a nurse practitioner. Throughout my first two years at Keene State College I discovered that knowledge is something that can't be taken away from you.
I am proud that I can set a good example for my little sister, as she has expressed a desire to attend college too.
Being a first generation college student is such a rewarding experience because I have shown myself that anything is possible with hard work, determination and perseverance.
