Leah Brown (2014)
My First Generation Story
As a Winthrop University senior, psychology major and McNair Scholar, I’m always ready to lend an ear when people need to talk. I’ve always been one of those friends that everybody goes to with their thoughts and problems. As I’m listening, I view it as a puzzle, putting together all the pieces that make people who they are.
At my high school in my hometown in Greenville, S.C., I took a class in the psychology field and realized it was the perfect career path for me. I chose Winthrop for its size, campus, and the chance for one-on-one interaction with the professors.
During my time at Winthrop, I’ve been involved in many extracurricular activities on campus, including as a Peer Mentor, a staff coordinator for the Peer Mentor Leadership Staff, vice president of the psychology honors society, Psi Chi, and as a member of the Psychology Club. These activities, particularly being a Peer Mentor, have improved my interaction skills and allowed me to work with people from different walks of life. At Winthrop, I’ve been immersed in diversity.
A highlight of my college career was my Study Abroad experience in England, which I miss so much! Throughout the four months of being there, I collected data for my research that I conducted this past summer as a McNair Scholar. This research examined time perspective, proneness towards shame and guilt, and regret between British and American young adults, and was conducted with a professor of psychology at Winthrop.
In the meantime, I was invited to present two past research projects of mine at the American Psychological Association Convention in Washington, D.C.!
After I graduate, I hope to enroll in a graduate program and eventually work at a practice or maybe a hospital therapy group. But my dream goal is to open my own practice!
