AASCU Graduates: The Difference We Make
B.A. General Studies
Western Washington University
Berenice is part of the first cohort to graduate from Western's unique Pathways to Teaching program, designed to place more bilingual teachers and teachers of color into Washington's school system, where students of color make up 43% of the pupils, yet only 7% of their teachers reflect this cultural makeup. Berenice's story is particularly inspiring, as her dream of becoming a teacher was on hold for years, as she was an undocumented student and worker who only became eligible through the new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals legislation signed by President Obama.
