Johnson served as mayor to the City of Savannah from 2004-2012 and acted as executive director of Chatham-Savannah Youth Futures Authority and chair of the National League of Cities, council on youth, education and families. He served a four-year term on the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education and retired as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Savannah State University. Johnson participated in the 2010 Board of Regents Awards and was presented as Armstrong’s distinguished alumnus.
