Dr. Lionel Bordeaux was named the first president of Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Reservation in 1973, and is still leading the university to this day. He provided leadership for the first fully-accredited reservation-based institution of higher education. Lionel was appointed by the U.S. president and served as chair of the White House Advisory Board on Tribal Colleges and Universities. He was also appointed by the U.S. Senate and co-chaired the 1992 White House Conference on Indian Education. Lionel was selected as Outstanding Educator of the Year by the South Dakota Indian Education Association and the National Congress of American Indians.
