The national movement for the repeal of the U.S. Military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (1993) and the United States’ “Defense of Marriage Act” (1996) were led, in part, by LGBTQ+ activist Robin McGehee. She served as co-director of the National Equality March held in Washington, D.C., which attracted 250,000 participants in October 2009. Following the event, Congress approved and President Barack Obama signed the “Hate Crimes Bill.” The following year, she co-founded, with Kip Williams, GetEQUAL. The U.S. Supreme Court overruled the “Defense of Marriage Act” on June 26, 2015. Robin and her fiancé Karen Johnston married the following day.
