Bachelor's degree in physical education
West offered an authoritative voice for physical education during the tenure of her husband, Governor John West, who served South Carolina from 1971-75. She served as a partner in diplomacy with Gov. West abroad when he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and promoted the acceptance of women in leadership roles. She was the first female president nationally of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, serving for more than 40 years as an influential volunteer.
