Upon graduation from Winthrop with a bachelor’s in physical education, Lucas was commissioned into the Army Medical Specialist Corps and completed the U.S. Army Physical Therapy Course. She earned a master’s from Stanford and a doctorate in anatomy from a University of Texas branch. She served at the Academy of Health Sciences; was named chief of the physical therapist section of the Army Medical Specialist Corps; and sworn in as chief of that corps. She earned the Surgeon General’s “A” Professional Designator, Order of the Military Medical Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
