AASCU recently teamed up with the American Council on Education (ACE) to host a stimulating discussion about the future of “Dreamers” and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.
“DACA and Dreamers: A Conversation with Jose Antonio Vargas”
drew nearly 300 participants. AASCU President Mildred García guided the July 23
conversation with the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and activist.
Vargas shared his personal story of being undocumented and
the challenges the estimated 3.6 million “Dreamers” in the United States face.
The recent Supreme Court decision regarding DACA and what
the higher education community can do to support “Dreamers” topped the
discussion, as well as the speed with which the demographics of higher
education continue to change.

García recently penned
an op-ed calling for passage of the Dream Act.
