Statement from AASCU President Muriel Howard on Supreme Court Decision that Upholds Race-Conscious Admissions Policy at the University of Texas
We are pleased that the Supreme Court has once again reaffirmed the constitutionality of higher education institutions' efforts to promote diversity through admissions practices that consider race and ethnicity as factors.
As we have argued over the years, diversity serves an essential educational goal in the intellectual and social development of students. Colleges and universities need sufficient latitude to devise appropriate admissions and financial aid practices that fit their unique missions and circumstances.
We are delighted with the Court's decision in support of such institutional discretion.
