Telling Our Story

In Person for presidents/chancellors, spouses/partners—we can’t wait to see you!

Virtual Conference Experience planned with livestreamed and recorded sessions for cabinet members and presidents/chancellors who are unable to join us.

About the Conference

Charles L. Welch

Charles Welch, president, Arkansas State University System and chair, AASCU Board of Directors

Every day, AASCU institutions demonstrate, in ways large and small, the inextricable linkages with their communities and with the world at large. These linkages, often referred to as public engagement, are an essential part of AASCU institutions’ stories and include a variety of activities, such as teaching and learning opportunities for first-generation students, low-income students, and students of color; outreach; applied research; service learning; and more. These linkages reflect a constant challenge for AASCU institutions to serve as “Stewards of Place,” to function as learners as well as teachers in tackling the opportunities and obstacles facing our communities.

As stewards of place, public engagement is more critical to AASCU institutions than ever before as we emerge from a global pandemic; continue to address racism and inequities; and respond to shifting student demographics, enrollment and budgetary challenges, debates over civil discourse on our campuses, and ongoing skepticism about the value of a college degree.

The AASCU 2021 Annual Meeting will focus on “Telling Our Story, Engaging & Empowering a Nation.” We will share successes of AASCU institutions engaging and empowering local communities across the nation. We will address issues impacting our sector and explore solutions together. We will rejoice in the opportunity to connect in person for the first time since 2019, as well as welcome cabinet members and those who cannot travel to join us virtually.

The conference will feature keynotes, general sessions, and concurrent sessions designed to share stories, insights, and solutions. There will be multiple networking opportunities including meals, receptions, and roundtable discussions, as well as time and space for affinity groups and committees to meet.
