About the Conference

Javier CevalosIt’s been 17 years since AASCU’s seminal publication “Stepping Forward as Stewards of Place” reinforced the inextricable linkages state colleges and universities have with their communities. The role of that regional stewardship and public engagement is critical now more than ever before in the face of shifting student demographics, enrollment and budgetary challenges, debates over civil discourse on our campuses, and ongoing skepticism about the value of a college degree.
The AASCU 2019 Annual Meeting will address these and other salient issues facing public higher education today as we explore “Stewards of Place: Reimagined.” As AASCU institutions continue to deliver high quality and affordable education to millions of students, many low-income, first-generation and students of color, we must also reassess and re-evaluate  the current higher education landscape to rightfully maintain our position as transformative institutions of learning, anchored in student success that drive economic opportunity, promote social mobility, and tirelessly uphold our missions and values every day.
Our host city of Phoenix is an appropriate setting for these discussions as the city’s booming economy will require a workforce and leaders who possess some type of postsecondary education, however gaps in educational attainment among the American Indian, Hispanic and White populations in the state persist. We hope you will join us as we reimagine our roles as “Stewards of Place” and look forward to seeing you there in October.

F. Javier Cevallos, President, Framingham State University (Mass.)
Chair, AASCU 2019 Board of Directors

Register early and join colleagues for the closing reception and dinner Tuesday, October 29, at the Wrigley Mansion.

Wrigley Mansion, a breathtaking landmark originally constructed in 1932 by chewing gum personality William Wrigley Jr., was thoughtfully designed as a 50th anniversary gift to his beloved wife, Ada. Sitting at the top of a hill, the mansion commands the best views in Phoenix, showcasing the mountains and the city below. Its architecture includes curated elements of Spanish, California Monterey and Mediterranean styles. Original tiles still grace the mansion, having been shipped from the Wrigley family’s tile factory on Catalina Island and carted up the hill by donkey.
