Olga Jimenez

My First Generation Story

My name is Olga Jimenez, and I am from Austin, Texas. Ever since I can remember, my family has been stationed here, working for what we have. As a first-generation college student, I never had anyone in my family to lead me in the right direction toward choosing which college could be right for me. For that reason, I am so grateful for the people that were able to give me choices and information on what it took to apply for college and what to expect when I arrived.

My high school, John H. Reagan High School, has a College and Career Center that has the most amazing people. If I had any questions about college, the application process, ACT and SAT tests or anything else, I could always go there and talk to Mr. Harris, Jorge, Jaimie and Ms. Sharrol. They had the answers I needed, and if they didn’t, they would find them for me. And not just them. Perla, the UHV recruiter for my area, would help as well when she was in the school. And when she was not, I could message her and ask her questions.

I’m grateful for all the resources and people that helped me get to where I am today, not only for myself but also for my family. Being the oldest of three, I always felt that there was a certain amount of pressure for me to do well in school and in life, so that I could be a great example to them. “A good role model,” my parents would say.

Being Hispanic, a woman, and the first to go to college was and still is a big deal for my family. Most of my family expects me to become a doctor, a lawyer, etc. All I want is to make my family proud and be a good role model for my brother, sister and others in my family. I want them to say, “If she did it, then so can I.” I want to be able to inspire them to want to strive for more than the bare minimum in life.

All that I have accomplished wouldn’t have been possible if not for the people in my life. For that, I will always be thankful. Yes, it’s been hard and stressful, but there will always be someone around the corner who can and will lend a helping hand should I need it.

About the Student

Olga Jimenez

My name is Olga and I'm a freshman at the University of Houston-Victoria. I'm majoring in psychology and working, so balancing those two things and everything else that gets added onto my plate is hard work, as I’m sure many other working students know. I don’t really have a lot of extra time to spare for extra activities, which I used to participate in often. I love to read and draw, but my time is divided between school and work. I’m lucky if get to do something for my own. But at times I don’t mind it because I know that I’m doing something productive and worth all the hard work.
