My First Generation Story

As a recent graduate from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), I am more than proud to say that I made it. I beat the odds.

Growing up, not everything was “hard” for my family and I. There was a time that I never had to “want” for anything. Then, reality hit. I was being raised in a single parent home, watching my mom live paycheck to paycheck to support my two brothers and myself.

I remember having talks with my mom about how I was going to even go to college. Grades were not an issue, but money was. She would always say, “Baby, you’re going, do not worry about that.” I applied for a few scholarships, but I did not think I would get them, because they were big scholarships. I got my first scholarship notification from The Golden LEAF Foundation, and I was so proud. Next, I went to the mailbox, and received a package from The Gates Millennium Scholarship. I was a recipient! And soon after, I received a phone call that notified me that I was also a UNCG Guarantee Scholar. Basically, I could go to any school in N.C. for free. That was an amazing feeling.

I chose to go to UNCG to pursue a degree in nursing.

Being a UNCG Scholar, I have had the opportunity to network, attend different workshops, further my studies in Mexico, and just feel included while in school. This also allowed me to venture out and join many organizations. This led to receiving several leadership awards at UNCG, such as The Martin Luther King Service Award, Outstanding Student Leader Award, Gold Leadership Challenge, and making the Dean’s & Chancellor’s list.

Aside from the organizations that I was involved in, I still managed to graduate with a 3.84 grade point average, magna cum laude, and Disciplinary Honors in Nursing.

I recently passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the state exam for registered nurses, and am now a registered nurse at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in the New Grad-Critical Care/Progressive Academy.

I thank God, my family, friends and UNCG for pushing me to make it to the top. I am the first in my immediate family to graduate college with a bachelor’s degree and to have become a nurse. This is only the beginning.
